About this project

The Ngoma Circular Green Project, implemented by ACORD Tanzania, aims to address youth and women unemployment, environmental degradation, and social tensions in Ngoma Ward, Sengerema District, Mwanza Region. Due to nearby gold mining activities, Ngoma has experienced rapid population growth, attracting many people in search of economic opportunities. However, most face limited livelihood options and increasing waste management challenges.

The project introduces circular economy solutions by training 100 youth and women to transform food waste into organic compost and cultivate Black Soldier Flies (BSF) for livestock feed. These low-cost, eco-friendly innovations will create green jobs, support poultry and fish farming, improve soil fertility, and reduce organic waste pollution.

Goals and Objectives

Goals and Objectives
The overall goal is to promote sustainable livelihoods and environmental resilience through green innovation.
Objectives include:

Providing practical training on composting and BSF production
Creating income-generating opportunities for youth and women
Supporting ecological farming and improved waste management
Intended Beneficiaries
The main beneficiaries are youth and women in Ngoma and neighboring villages, selected due to their vulnerability to poverty, unemployment, and exclusion from the mining economy. They will gain skills, tools, and income sources while contributing to environmental conservation.

Sustainability and Scaling
The project ensures sustainability by using low-cost technologies, training local trainers, and linking beneficiaries to local markets. The compost and BSF production models are replicable in other rural communities facing similar challenges. With growing interest in climate-smart agriculture, the project has strong potential for scaling across Mwanza and other regions, helping communities turn waste into economic opportunity while protecting their environment.

Expected result

Expected Results
50 Green Jobs Created in Poultry, Fish Farming, and Compost Sales
By the end of the project, at least 50 direct green jobs will be created for youth and women through value chains in poultry farming, fish farming, and the sale of organic compost. These jobs will improve household incomes and promote climate-resilient livelihoods.
10 Tons of Food Waste Recycled into Organic Compost
The project will successfully recycle at least 10 tons of food waste into high-quality organic compost. This will reduce environmental pollution and improve soil fertility for ecological farming in Ngoma and nearby communities.
Increased Awareness of Circular Economy in 5 Surrounding Villages
Community awareness campaigns will reach at least 500 residents across 5 neighboring villages. These campaigns will promote understanding of circular economy practices and encourage replication of composting and BSF innovations beyond Ngoma Ward.
Monitoring Capacity
ACORD Tanzania will track progress using a clear and practical results monitoring framework. Monitoring tools will include monthly activity reports, regular field visits, photo documentation, and beneficiary feedback. A mid-term review will assess progress, and a final evaluation will measure the project’s overall impact and provide lessons for potential scaling.
