About this project

Urban agriculture in Lima is highly developed and has been very well received in recent years. But, it is still concentrated in peri-urban areas and above ground, this does not ensure that the water used is of quality, nor that it is used efficiently. This is due to the lack of interest on the part of the main actors to massify an agriculture adapted to the Lima lifestyle, with a more technified production system and with access to drinking water for the post harvest.

For this reason, at Huertos en Azoteas, we have been working for 2 years in the development of an efficient production system with the use of water, efficient with the use of light and using resources that are easily accessible in the city. Our model is installed on rooftops, places with high solar radiation, plans and availability of quality water. We added a drip irrigation system with a connection to enter organic foliar fertilizers through the system. All this allows us to efficiently use resources and produce larger quantities with less initial investment.

Our objective is to massify an urban production system that responsibly uses water, both for irrigation and for food disinfection. We do this for various purposes. It would create jobs, by the production and commercialization of organic vegetables with the added value of urban sustainability. It would generate the environmental benefits of an ecological production, in the beneficial fauna, the environmental temperature and the development of a stronger environmental ethic in the population. In addition, we would give added value to urban and peri-urban composting. Since it is our main input. Furthermore, food would be produced with less use of water.

This system is based on a key innovation. The cultivation of vegetables without drainage, possible due to the high porosity of the substrate. This allows us to save, for example in tomato, 57% of water in relation to production in greenhouses. Use more efficiently the sunlight that is wasted on the roofs of various houses in Lima. Using resources that would otherwise end up in a city dump, such as fruit boxes from markets, thick plastics, vegetable waste from the kitchen and waste from the wood industry, such as wood chips.
