1. Successfully introduce and establish our organic citronella oil in the cosmetics and perfumery industries within the next 2 years.
2. Within the next 5-10 years, establish a minimum of 50 hectares of citronella farmlands in each of the six agro-ecological zones of Ghana, accompanied by 10,000L capacity steam distillation plants.
3. Reduce carbon footprint by 25% in Ghana’s agro-ecological zones through sustainable agriculture practices and renewable energy.
4. Create economic opportunities for rural youth and reducing unemployment by 40%.
Expected result
EXPECTED OUTCOME
Citrofarms Innovation will contribute significantly to poverty reduction, climate change, health, industries, innovations and sustaining local communities.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
Employment of at least 20 young people for the planting, maintenance of our citronella farmlands and operation of our stream distillation plants.
HEALTH IMPACT
Research by Rolim et al. discovered that citronella oil possesses significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an industrially important organic ingredient in cosmetic and perfume production for less adverse long term health effects.
ENIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Carbon control:
Citronella grass, like other plants, absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. According to studies, Citronella grass can absorb around 2-3 times more carbon than many other crops, making it a valuable crop for carbon sequestration. Citronella grass can absorb about 25 tons of CO2 per hectare per year. 5 hectares of citronella grass farmland can absorb approximately 125 tons of CO2 per year.
To put this into perspective:
125 tons of CO2 is equivalent to the annual emissions of about 27 cars.
BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
Preservation of native species and introduction of native species to new cultivation areas.
