About this project
The project "Mayi ya peto mpona banso. "Clean Water for All" is a youth-led initiative to provide urgent and long-term access to clean, safe drinking water for approximately 800,000 residents of Pumbu Street, in the Mont-Ngafula district of Kinshasa, DRC. The area has faced extreme challenges due to the absence of accessible water infrastructure. Previously limited access via the REGIDESO water service has been completely disrupted by severe erosion and landslides during June 2025.
Currently, community members – especially women and youth – are forced to walk over 3,000 meters through dangerous ravines to collect water from unsecured sources. This project aims to resolve this critical issue through the installation of a low-cost, climate-resilient water solution, either by drilling a borehole or connecting to a safer natural source closer to the community.
The 6-month project, managed by ONGD-AID, includes technical assessments, installation of infrastructure, community engagement, hygiene promotion, and the creation of a local water management committee for long-term sustainability. The total budget is estimated at $15,000 USD.
Goals and Objectives
Goals:
To ensure clean and sustainable access to drinking water for 800,000 underserved residents of Pumbu Street.
Objectives:
Reduce water-fetching distance from 3,000+ meters to under 500 meters. Install affordable water delivery infrastructure in 6 months.
Empower youth and women in the management and maintenance of the water system.
Strengthen resilience to water-related health risks and climate-induced challenges.
Sustainability & Scaling:
A local water committee will be trained to oversee system maintenance. The infrastructure will be low-cost and designed for longevity. The model can be replicated in other underserved urban communities in Kinshasa and elsewhere, especially those vulnerable to erosion and climate shocks.
Expected result
Our goals and objectives of this project is to:
Provide clean water to a defined area in Mont-Ngafula.
Reach 800,000 beneficiaries and reduce water collection distance to <500 meters.
All infrastructure and training completed within 6 months.
Strong alignment with SDG 6 and local needs.
Implementation within 6 months from funding reception.
We will monitor access points, usage rates, and feedback from beneficiaries. Regular assessments will ensure accountability.
